Chris Colfer's "The Wishing Spell" is a fantastic book that immerses the reader into the magical land of fairy tales. The book immediately shows Colfer's imaginative take on the classic snow-white story. This shows the reader that what they thought was set in stone may not be. This allows Colfer to write cool twists and turns in this book that surprise the reader. The main characters Alex and Conner Bailey(who are twins) are highly developed by Colfer, and this helps the reader fully understand and empathize with the twins throughout the book. However, Colfer doesn't just develop Alex and Conner; he develops the side characters significantly as well.
When Alex and Conner are thrust into this fairy tale world, they are faced with many trials and tribulations to get back to their lives. They must rely on their knowledge of fairy tales to guide them and survive. Colfer strongly promotes and emphasizes the value of family, especially when things are rough. Colfer also pulls at the heartstrings of his readers, which makes the reader more attached to the characters he has created. The settings in "The Wishing Spell" are highly detailed which allows the reader to feel like they are inside this magical world as well.
However, Colfer doesn't just give everything out on a silver platter to his readers. he writes many mysteries that shock the readers when they happen. I know they shocked me. "The Wishing Spell" isn't just a great book by itself; it is a wonderful introduction to the incredible series that follows.
I rate this book 8.5/10.
